Grow room ventilation & climate

How to ventilate a grow tent

A complete set-up has four parts:

  • Extraction: an inline fan at the top takes warm, humid air outside. Work out the airflow like this: tent volume × 60 × 1.3–1.5. Models and a table by tent size are on the inline fans page.
  • Odour filter: a carbon filter fitted before the fan traps odours; it needs at least the same airflow rating and the same diameter.
  • Circulation: oscillating fans move air between the plants, even out the temperature and prevent pockets of humidity.
  • Intake: fresh air enters through the low vents of the tent. With the right ventilation the tent stays under slight negative pressure and the walls bow slightly inwards.

If you are starting from scratch, an AC Infinity grow tent ventilation kit in 100 or 150 mm combines an EC fan, controller and carbon filter already matched.

Temperature and humidity by stage

Ventilation and climate equipment are there to keep you within these ranges, measured with the lights on. With the lights off it can be 2–6 °C cooler, but never below 16 °C.

StageTemperatureRelative humidityLeaf VPD
Cuttings in a propagator22–25 °C80–90%–
Seedlings22–25 °C65–75%0.4–0.8 kPa
Vegetative stage22–28 °C55–65%0.8–1.2 kPa
Flowering, first 5–6 weeks20–26 °C45–55%1.0–1.5 kPa
Flowering, last 2–3 weeks20–24 °C40–50%1.0–1.5 kPa

If extraction alone is not enough, add the right device: humidifiers when the air is too dry, for example in winter with the heating on; dehumidifiers in a cellar or in the last weeks of flowering; heaters for cold nights in unheated rooms. This category also has CO2 meters and regulators.

Odour and respect for the neighbours

In a flat or an apartment block, the exhaust air should not bother anyone. The foundation is a carbon filter sized to the fan's airflow. Odour control products such as ONA gels neutralise any remaining smell in the room, outside the tent. Ozone generators are fitted only in the exhaust duct leading outside: ozone must not be breathed in, so no people or animals in the treated space and never inside the grow tent with the plants.

Noise and power consumption

Inline fans with EC motors use less power than AC models, adjust without humming and are quieter at reduced speed. For the rush of air in the ducting there are duct silencers in 125, 160 and 200 mm; for vibration, hang the fan on straps. Short ducting with few bends cuts both noise and airflow losses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I ventilate a grow tent?

An inline fan at the top with a carbon filter, fresh air through the low vents and an oscillating fan inside. The tent should stay under slight negative pressure.

What size inline fan do I need?

Calculate volume × 60 × 1.3–1.5. A 120x120x200 tent needs 225–260 m³/h of real airflow, so a 125 mm fan rated at 300–400 m³/h.

What temperature and humidity should a grow room have?

In the vegetative stage 22–28 °C and 55–65% humidity; in flowering 20–26 °C and 45–55%, dropping to 40–50% in the last 2–3 weeks.

Do I need an intake fan?

In almost all tents the passive low vents are enough. An intake fan helps in large grow rooms or with long ducting, and it must move less air than the extractor so the negative pressure remains.
