Manual models cost less and are quiet, but take time and effort; electric ones pay off when you process large quantities at every harvest. So the main criterion is volume, then method: dry or wet.

Dry or wet

Wet trimming is done right after cutting, while the leaves are still firm. Dry trimming is done after 7–14 days of drying at 18–21 °C and 55–62% humidity, when the leaves are crisp and come away easily. Rotating machines such as the Trimbag and Tumble Trimmer work dry: the material must be properly dried, otherwise the leaves do not come off and the buds get crushed. Nets and tents for this step are under drying.

Use and maintenance

  • Remove large leaves by hand first: the machine works best on small leaves.
  • Do not overfill the drum or bag, and work in short cycles, checking the result.
  • Clean blades, grid and drum after every session with the cleaner recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Replace the blades when they tear instead of cutting; replacement blades are available for the Tumble Trimmer.
  • Wear gloves and work on clean surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

Which bud trimmer suits home growers?

For small harvests a Trimbag or the manual Tumble Trimmer is enough. For larger quantities an electric machine such as the Trimpro Automatik saves hours; the Twister T4 is for professional volumes.

Wet or dry trimmer – which is better?

It depends on your method: wet trimming happens right after cutting, dry trimming after drying. The Trimbag and Tumble Trimmer work dry.

How does a tumble trimmer work?

You put the dried material in the drum and turn the crank: the buds roll and the blades cut off the leaves that poke through the grid; they fall below.

Does a trimmer damage the flowers?

Not if the material is properly dried, the load is moderate and the cycles are short. Too many turns or material that is still damp will crush the buds.
