Duct silencers for inline fans

How to make your grow tent fan quieter

The noise of an extraction system has several sources, and a silencer deals with one of them. Before buying, check where the noise comes from:

Source of noiseRemedy
Rush of air in the duct and at the outletSilencer after the fan, short ducting, few bends
Vibration on the tent and wallsFan hung on straps or anti-vibration mounts, not touching the frame
Motor at high speedEC fan with some headroom, run at reduced speed
Fan too smallLarger-diameter model running more slowly

If the fan is old or too small for the tent, it is worth replacing: among the inline fans there are EC models and acoustically insulated versions.

Where to install a duct silencer

  1. Directly after the fan, on the exhaust side, where the airflow is most turbulent.
  2. Always in the same diameter as the fan: 125, 160 or 200 mm.
  3. Secure it with clamps and support it so it does not hang on the fan.
  4. Route the air outlet away from your neighbours' windows and balconies: the noise they notice drops further.

The Can-Filters Silencer 160 is the long version: more length usually means more attenuation, but it needs more space along the duct.

Silencer or acoustic ducting?

Acoustic ducting mainly reduces the noise passing through the duct wall; the silencer works on the rush of air along the duct. In a bedroom or a flat the two are often combined: silencer right after the fan, insulated ducting to the outlet. If you want a matched system, the EC-driven ventilation kits are already quiet at low speed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my grow tent fan quieter?

Hang the fan on straps, use short ducting, run an EC motor at reduced speed and add a silencer after the fan.

Where should a duct silencer be installed?

Directly after the fan, on the exhaust side, in the same diameter as the fan.

Does a silencer reduce airflow?

Slightly, like any length of duct, but far less than a tight bend or a long duct. If the fan has some headroom you will not notice it.

Silencer or acoustic ducting?

The silencer is more effective against the rush of air, acoustic ducting against noise coming through the duct wall. Using both gives the best result.
