Fan speed controller or climate controller: the differences
A fan speed controller makes the extractor run slower or faster, but you do the adjusting. A climate controller reads a sensor and changes the speed itself to stay within the set values, often with separate day and night settings. The most complete systems run several devices and sensors from a single unit.
Before choosing, check your fan's motor. EC controllers only work with compatible EC fans: check on the product sheet that the brand and model are supported. AC motors need controllers designed for AC motors.
| Type | What it controls | Models in our range |
|---|
| EC fan controller | speed of fans with an EC motor | Can-Fan, PrimaKlima ECTC-1M, Carbon Active 4-in-1, GrowControl FanBase EC+ |
| Controller with day/night settings | minimum and maximum fan speed by temperature | GSE Min/Max day/night and temperature |
| Climate controller | grow room ventilation according to the measured climate | GrowControl GrowBase and GrowBase Pro |
| Complete system | several devices and sensors from a single unit | Trolmaster Hydro-X (HCS-1), Trolmaster Tent-X (TCS-1E) |
Settings for each stage
| Stage | Temperature, lights on | Relative humidity | Leaf VPD |
|---|
| Seedlings | 22–25 °C | 65–75% | 0.4–0.8 kPa |
| Vegetative stage | 22–28 °C | 55–65% | 0.8–1.2 kPa |
| Flowering, first 5–6 weeks | 20–26 °C | 45–55% | 1.0–1.5 kPa |
| Flowering, last 2–3 weeks | 20–24 °C | 40–50% | 1.0–1.5 kPa |
With lights off, set 2–6 °C lower, never below 16 °C. VPD (vapour pressure deficit) sums up temperature and humidity in a single number, in kPa, and shows how much water the air draws from the leaves. Too low, and plants transpire little and the buds stay damp; too high, and the stomata close and growth slows. It is corrected mainly through humidity: fan speed, humidifiers and dehumidifiers.
Installation and use
- Place the sensor at canopy height, shaded from the lamp's direct light and away from the air outlet.
- Always set a minimum speed for the extractor fan: even when the tent is cool, it needs air exchange.
- Check the sensor against a reference hygrometer from time to time: ordinary instruments are off by 3–5 humidity points.
- Respect the controller's maximum load; lights and powerful devices belong on timer relay boxes and RCD-protected power distribution.

Frequently asked questions
What does a grow room controller do?
It keeps temperature and humidity at the set values by adjusting the extractor fan itself, often with separate day and night settings. This keeps the climate stable even when the room temperature changes.
Fan speed controller or full climate controller?
A fan speed controller only changes speed when you adjust it. A climate controller measures the climate with a sensor and adapts the speed automatically.
What is VPD and how do I control it?
Vapour pressure deficit sums up temperature and humidity in kPa. Reference values: 0.4–0.8 kPa for seedlings, 0.8–1.2 in veg, 1.0–1.5 in flowering; it is corrected mainly through humidity.
Can I control my grow room from an app?
Yes, with systems that offer an app, such as the Trolmaster ranges. Check on the product sheet which modules are needed to connect.
