IBC tank for rainwater
Many people use a 1000 litre IBC tank to collect rainwater from a roof or shelter. The maths is simple: 1 mm of rain on 1 m² gives 1 litre. With 20 m² of roof and a 25 mm downpour, about 500 L flows in, so two heavy showers fill a 1000 L tank.
- Stand it on a level, load-bearing base: when full, a 1000 L tank weighs about a tonne.
- Fit a leaf filter where the downpipe enters.
- Before the first frost, drain the tank and the tap.
- Rainwater contains few salts: measure pH and EC before using it in the grow tent. It is irrigation water, not drinking water.
Grow tent reservoir: size and hygiene
For automatic watering, multiply the daily use of all plants by the days of autonomy you need and add about 20% reserve. Nutrient solution is renewed every 7–10 days, so a large tank works mainly as a water store from which you mix fresh solution each time. Keep it closed, dark and clean between cycles. Trays and accessories are in the watering and hydroponics category, DWC and aeroponic set-ups under hydroponic systems; for checks you need a pH and EC meter.

Useful guides
Frequently asked questions
What are 1000 litre tanks called?
They are called IBC tanks (intermediate bulk containers): a plastic tank inside a metal cage, usually on a pallet.
Can an IBC tank be used for irrigation water?
Yes, it is one of the most common uses, both for rainwater in the garden and as a store for the grow tent. If it stands outdoors, choose the black one.
Flexible or rigid water tank – which is better?
A rigid IBC tank is sturdy, can stand outdoors and moves with a pallet truck; the 750 L collapsible tank folds flat and fits where a rigid tank will not go. In the garden the IBC makes sense, in a hard-to-reach grow room the collapsible one.
How do I stop algae growing in a water tank?
Use a black tank, which blocks light, or cover a white one with a dark sheet. Keep the lid closed and clean the tank every time you empty it.
