Grow nutrients and fertilisers

How to choose your nutrients

The growing medium comes first, then the choice between organic and mineral feeding. For a full cycle one base line from the same brand is enough, one product for growth and one for flowering; additives are optional.

  • Organic (BioBizz, Canna Bio, Plagron Alga): materials of plant or animal origin that soil life releases gradually. They are designed mainly for soil; in recirculating hydro systems they can leave deposits in tubes and pumps.
  • Mineral (Canna Terra and Coco A+B, Plagron Terra, Cocos and Hydro): salts that are immediately available to the roots, with a fast effect and an EC that is easy to measure. An overdose soon shows on the leaf tips.

Lines for soil, coco and hydro

Coco binds calcium and magnesium and releases potassium, which is why coco lines have their own formula; in hydroponics all the nutrition comes from the solution.

Add the A and B parts to the water one at a time, stirring in between: the two concentrates must never be mixed directly. The complete lines by brand: BioBizz nutrients, Canna, Plagron and Metrop.

Base nutrients and additives

The base nutrient supplies nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace elements; additives complement it in one specific area without replacing it.

Doses follow the manufacturer's feeding schedule (ml per litre, week by week). Start with a lower dose than stated and only increase it if the plant needs more, checking the EC: 0.4–0.8 mS/cm for seedlings and cuttings, 0.8–1.6 in the vegetative stage, 1.2–2.0 in flowering.

pH regulators

Always adjust the pH after adding the nutrients, because the nutrients themselves shift it. In this category you will find BioBizz pH Plus and pH Minus: add a few drops at a time, stir and measure again. To check pH and EC you need calibrated meters, which you will find among the pH and EC meters.

Frequently asked questions

What nutrients are best for indoor growing?

A base line that matches your growing medium, with a grow and a bloom product from the same brand: for example Bio-Grow and Bio-Bloom in soil or an A+B line in coco.

Organic or mineral nutrients – which is better?

It depends on the growing medium: organic nutrients are designed mainly for soil, while mineral nutrients can be dosed precisely by EC and are the usual choice in coco and hydroponics.

When should you switch from grow to bloom nutrients?

When the plant enters flowering, which for photoperiod varieties is the switch to 12 hours of light. Many schedules include a few transition weeks in which the grow base continues: follow the one for your brand.

How do you read a feeding schedule?

The rows are the weeks, grouped by stage, and the columns are the products with the dose in ml per litre of water, often with the target EC. Read the row for the current week, add the products to the water one by one, then measure EC and pH.

Can you mix nutrients from different brands?

Not for base nutrients: each line is balanced on its own, and two bases together easily lead to overfeeding. A single additive from another brand can be added with care while checking the EC.
