Grow light timer relay boxes

Why a timer box with a relay

An ordinary plug-in timer has small contacts that are not designed for the inrush current of HPS ballasts and LED drivers at switch-on, and wears out quickly with several lights. In a timer box the timer drives a power relay that switches the lights' load onto separate sockets: the wiring is rated for the stated power, for example 4 lights of 600 W.

How much load a socket can take

A Swiss T13 household socket is rated at 10 A: at 230 V that is about 2,300 W. For devices running many hours, stay below 80%, about 1,800 W, counting every device on the same circuit.

Safety: RCD and 400 V installations

  • Only connect the grow room to sockets protected by a 30 mA residual current device (RCD, FI in Switzerland): it cuts the power if current leaks to earth, for example through water or a person. The Ekström units have a built-in RCD.
  • Keep distribution units and cables off the floor, away from tanks and saucers; no daisy-chained extension leads.
  • The 32 A unit, the 400 V Timer Box and any 400 V installation must be connected and tested by an electrician: they are not devices to wire up yourself.
  • If you add lights or a heater, have the circuit and fuses checked first.

The section also includes the Trolmaster TSH-1 temperature/humidity station, to pair with the Trolmaster systems among the grow room controllers.

Frequently asked questions

How many grow lights can I run on one outlet?

A 10 A T13 socket takes about 2,300 W; for continuous load stay below 1,800 W in total. Two 600 W lights are fine, four need a 16 A connection.

What is a timer relay box for?

It is a distribution box with a timer and power relay that switches several lights on and off together. This protects the timer from inrush current at switch-on.

Do I need an RCD in a grow room?

Yes: water and electricity share the same space. Only use sockets protected by a 30 mA RCD or a distribution unit with a built-in RCD.

How should I set the timer for veg and flower?

18 hours of light and 6 of darkness for seedlings and veg, 12/12 for flowering photoperiod varieties. Autoflowers stay on 18/6 or 20/4.
