Plagron soil and coco substrates

Lightmix, Growmix or Batmix

The three Plagron soils differ in their starting charge of nutrients: the richer the soil, the later you start feeding, but the less margin you have with young plants.

These soils pair with soil nutrients, for example Plagron Terra Grow and Terra Bloom or Alga Grow and Alga Bloom, which you will find among the Plagron nutrients. Water at pH 6.0–7.0 and EC by stage: 0.8–1.6 mS/cm in the vegetative stage, 1.2–2.0 in flowering.

Plagron coco: Premium, 70/30, Hydro Cocos and Slab

  • Cocos Premium: pure coco coir, for growers who want to handle all feeding through nutrients.
  • Cocos Perlite 70/30: 70% coco and 30% perlite, with more air and drainage; suits frequent watering.
  • Hydro Cocos 60/40: a mix of about 60% clay pebbles and 40% coco with no added fertiliser, for hydroponic systems and automatic watering.
  • Cocos Slab: a coco slab for drip systems, as an alternative to rockwool slabs.

Coco works at pH 5.5–6.5 with a dedicated nutrient such as Plagron Cocos A+B, given at almost every watering; never let it dry out completely.

Euro Pebbles, perlite and cutting soil

Euro Pebbles (45 L bag) are clay pebbles for DWC and flood and drain, or for a 2–3 cm drainage layer at the bottom of the pot. Perlite in 10 and 60 L bags lightens soils, usually at 10–30% by volume. The 25 L soil for cuttings and seeds is fine and lightly fertilised, for the first weeks before potting on. Other brands and a comparison of grow media are on the grow media page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Plagron Lightmix, Growmix and Batmix?

The amount of starting feed: Lightmix is light, Growmix pre-fertilised and Batmix the richest.

Do you need to feed Lightmix from day one?

Not from day one: the light fertilisation only lasts a short time, then you start feeding according to the Plagron chart for Lightmix. If the lower leaves turn paler, it is time to feed.

Cocos Premium or Cocos Perlite?

Cocos Premium is pure coco; Cocos Perlite 70/30 contains 30% perlite, so it drains more and holds less water. With frequent or automatic watering, 70/30 leaves more air for the roots.

Do clay pebbles need rinsing?

Yes, rinse them until the water runs clear, otherwise the dust ends up in the reservoir and pumps.
