How to choose the right bulb
- Same wattage as the ballast: a 600 W bulb only goes on a 600 W ballast, or on an adjustable ballast set to 600 W. On a 400 W ballast it will not run properly and will be damaged. Also check that the bulb's voltage matches the ballast.
- E40 socket: the standard for HPS reflectors at these wattages.
- Spectrum: HPS bulbs give yellow-orange, red-rich light suited to flowering. "Agro" versions add a share of blue and are also used in the vegetative stage.
| Bulb | Wattage | Typical grow tent |
|---|
| Philips Son-T | 250 W | 60x60 cm |
| Philips Son-T GreenPower | 400 W | 80x80 cm, at most 100x100 cm |
| Osram Plantastar E40 | 400 W | 80x80 cm, at most 100x100 cm |
| Philips Son-T GreenPower | 600 W | 100x100–120x120 cm |
When to replace the bulb
An HPS bulb loses light gradually: it still ignites, but after 1–2 years of regular use it gives out noticeably less, and the plants receive less without you seeing it. It is better to replace it before a new flowering cycle than to wait for it to fail. Signs of end of life: slow ignition, a lamp that switches itself off and on again, blackened glass at the ends.
Fitting and disposal
- Switch off the power and let the bulb cool for at least 15 minutes before touching it.
- Hold the glass with clean gloves or a dry cloth and screw it in without forcing.
- An HPS that has just been switched off only restarts after a few minutes of cooling: this is normal.
- Used bulbs do not go in household waste: take them to a collection point or a shop that sells lamps and takes them back free of charge.
If you are thinking of switching to LED, the comparison and running costs are on the grow lights page.

Frequently asked questions
How often should you replace an HPS bulb?
Every 1–2 years of regular use, ideally before a new flowering cycle. The bulb still lights up but gives out less light.
What is the difference between a standard HPS and an Agro bulb?
A standard HPS bulb gives yellow-orange, red-rich light designed for flowering. The Agro version adds a share of blue and is also used in the vegetative stage.
Can I use a 600 W bulb on a 400 W ballast?
No: bulb and ballast must have the same wattage. You need a 600 W ballast, or an adjustable ballast that goes up to 600 W, set to that value.
Philips or Osram: which HPS bulb is better?
Both have an E40 socket: first match the wattage of your ballast, then pick the model. At 400 W, both the Philips Son-T GreenPower and the Osram Plantastar fit.
