Inline fans for grow tents

How to calculate the airflow you need

The tent volume (width × depth × height, in m³) multiplied by 60 gives the airflow for one complete air change per minute. The factor of 1.3–1.5 makes up for the carbon filter, ducting and bends, which all slow the air down. Rated airflow is measured with no resistance, so pick a fan with headroom and turn its speed down.

Grow tent (cm)VolumeCalculated airflowTypical diameter
60x60x1600.6 m³45–52 m³/h100 mm
80x80x1601.0 m³80–92 m³/h100 mm
100x100x2002.0 m³156–180 m³/h100–125 mm
120x120x2002.9 m³225–260 m³/h125 mm
150x150x2004.5 m³350–405 m³/h150–160 mm
240x120x2005.8 m³450–520 m³/h160–200 mm

With HPS lamps or in a warm room, aim for the top of the range; grow rooms need models from 200 mm upwards. Fans in this category start at 125 mm: for tents up to 80x80 there are the 100 mm AC Infinity kits, or a 125 mm EC fan run at low speed.

Models and differences

  • PrimaKlima EC with controller (PK125, PK160, PK250): 700–1,450 m³/h, variable speed; the WhisperBlower versions are designed to run more quietly.
  • S&P TD Silent in 125, 160 and 200 mm: 350–1,000 m³/h, for tents from 100x100 up to small grow rooms.
  • Can-Fan Isomax in 250 and 315 mm: acoustically insulated housing, 1,480–2,380 m³/h, for grow rooms or several linked tents.
  • PrimaKlima PK300 Blue Line: 4,400 m³/h for large rooms.

Installation and noise

  1. Hang the carbon filter at the top of the tent, where warm air collects, with the fan right after it: the fan pulls the air through the filter.
  2. Keep ducting short with few bends: every metre and every bend costs airflow.
  3. If the rush of air in the duct is bothersome, fit one of the duct silencers after the fan.
  4. Set the speed so the tent walls bow slightly inwards: the slight negative pressure stops air escaping through gaps.

If you prefer fan, filter and controller already matched, see the ventilation kits; the right filter for each diameter is among the carbon filters.

Frequently asked questions

What size inline fan do I need for my grow tent?

Multiply the tent volume in m³ by 60 and then by 1.3–1.5. For a 120x120x200 tent that gives 225–260 m³/h of real airflow, so a 125 mm fan rated at 300–400 m³/h.

Centrifugal or axial fan?

With a carbon filter and ducting you need a fan that holds its airflow against resistance, which is why grow tents use centrifugal or mixed-flow inline fans. A simple axial fan loses a lot of airflow as soon as a filter is attached.

Are EC fans worth it?

Yes, if the fan runs for long hours: it uses less power, adjusts smoothly and is quieter at low speed than an AC fan with a controller.
