Grow tents and grow boxes

How to choose your grow tent size

Two measurements matter: the floor area decides how many plants fit, the height decides how tall they can grow. Light and extractor fan are chosen afterwards to match the tent. The table sums up starting values for the sizes in this collection, with modern LEDs (300–400 real watts per m²) and medium-sized plants without training; extraction is tent volume × 60 air changes per hour × 1.3–1.5 margin for filter and ducting.

240x240x2005.76 m²23–521,700–2,300 W900–1,040 m³/h

With a few large trained plants (SCROG) 1–4 per m² are enough, with many small plants from cuttings (SOG) you reach 9–16: the details are in the guide on how many plants fit in a grow tent. For beginners an 80x80 or 100x100 is a good compromise between space, power use and ease of handling. For mother plants and the vegetative stage there is also a 120x120 growth set.

Usable height: how tall a grow tent should be

Subtract 70–100 cm from the tent height: that space goes to hangers and lamp (15–25 cm), pot (25–35 cm) and the gap between lamp and tops (30–45 cm with most LEDs in flowering). In a 140 cm tent the plant should not exceed 40–70 cm, in a 200 cm tent 100–130 cm. Photoperiod plants stretch by 50–100% in the first weeks of flowering, so 180–200 cm is the sensible height for them, while 120–160 cm is enough for autoflowers, seedlings and cuttings.

Tent quality: what to check

  • Frame: steel poles and metal corners, because lamp, carbon filter and extractor fan together weigh 12–25 kg in a 120x120.
  • Fabric: thick, free of pinholes, with a reflective lining stretched tight without creases.
  • Zips and seams: covered by a flap and light-tight, because no light may get in during the 12 hours of darkness in flowering.
  • Openings: ducting sleeves at the top matching the diameter of fan and filter (100–200 mm), low vents with mesh and a cable port.
  • Floor: waterproof base tray with a raised rim; you still need saucers or a grow tent tray under the pots.

Homebox and Secret Jardin are two brands specialised in grow tents: compare size, height, openings and materials on each product page. Once you have chosen the tent, complete your setup with grow lights and air and climate equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What size grow tent should a beginner buy?

For a first cycle with 3–5 plants an 80x80 tent 160–180 cm tall works well, with 180–250 real LED watts and a 100 mm extractor. If space is short or you grow autoflowers, a 60x60 is enough; for larger photoperiod plants choose a 100x100 or 120x120.

How many plants fit in a 120x120 grow tent?

Without training, 6–12 medium-sized plants in pots of 7–20 litres depending on the number. With a few large trained plants (SCROG) 1–4 are enough; with many small plants from cuttings (SOG) you can fit 13–23.

Is an 80x80 or a 120x120 grow tent better?

The 120x120 has more than twice the floor area (1.44 m² against 0.64 m²), but needs 400–600 real LED watts instead of 180–250 W and a 125 mm extractor fan. The 80x80 uses less power and fits in a box room; the 120x120 makes sense if you have room for 6–12 plants.

How tall should a grow tent be?

At least 160 cm for most grows and 180–200 cm for photoperiod plants. Lamp, pot and distance to the tops already take up 70–100 cm of the height.
