Heated propagators and cloning gels

How to choose a heated propagator

A propagator is a mini greenhouse with a clear lid and adjustable vents: it keeps humidity high around the cuttings, which absorb very little water until they have roots. In a room below 20 °C, as often in winter, you also need a heat mat, because warmth at the base speeds up root formation. The Propagator 64/50 in this collection comes with a heat mat controlled by thermostat or by dimmer: the thermostat keeps the medium temperature constant, while with the dimmer you set the power yourself and check with a thermometer.

Climate inside the propagator

Cuttings need high humidity in the first days and a gradual move to drier air as they root. The same values apply to freshly sprouted seeds in cubes or plugs.

Mist the walls of the propagator, not the leaves, and keep the medium moist but not soaking. The light should be gentle: a T5 tube or an LED dimmed to 20–30%, hung higher than usual, is enough. Above 27 °C the risk of stem rot at the base rises.

Rooting gel, spray and starter plugs

  • CloneUp: rooting gel for dipping the bottom 1–2 cm of the freshly cut stem; it sticks well and seals the cut.
  • Clonex Mist: spray for misting the cuttings while they root.
  • Eazy Plug: trays of 77, 104 or 150 ready-to-use plugs that are transplanted whole without disturbing the roots.
  • Plagron Seedbox: set for starting seeds and young plants.

Instead of plugs you can use Grodan rockwool cubes, soaked for about an hour in water at pH 5.5–6.0 before use. Seeds and cuttings started in plugs or cubes are then transplanted in the same way.

From rooted cutting to pot

The first roots usually appear in 7–14 days, sometimes up to 21. Transplant when 3–5 roots grow out of the cube or plug, into a 0.5–1 litre pot or straight into the intermediate pot, without removing the cube. Water at the right pH and, if the medium is not pre-fertilised, with a little nutrient (EC 0.4–0.8 mS/cm). Suitable small pots are among the plant pots; for the next stage you need a grow tent and a dimmable light.

Every cutting has the same genetics as its mother plant.

Frequently asked questions

How do you root cuttings faster?

Take 10–15 cm tips from a mother plant in the vegetative stage, recut them under water and dip the cut in rooting gel. Keep the air at 22–25 °C, the medium at 22–24 °C and humidity at 80–90%, with gentle light.

Do you need a heat mat for germination?

Yes, if the room stays below 20 °C, because seeds and cuttings want 22–25 °C. Use it with a thermostat, otherwise it can overheat and dry out the medium.

Clonex or CloneUp: which is better?

They do different jobs: CloneUp is a rooting gel applied to the cut, while Clonex Mist is a spray for the cuttings as they root. They can be used together.

What humidity do cuttings need?

80–90% for the first 5 days, 75–80% from day 6 to 10 and 65–70% after rooting, opening the vents a little at a time.
