LED grow lights for indoor growing

The LED grow lights in this section are full-spectrum models from Lumatek and Lumen-King, from 200 to 1000 W, with efficiency of up to 2.9 µmol/J. For flowering, allow 300–400 W of actual power per m²: an ATS 200 W PRO is enough for an 80x80, a Zeus 465 W PRO for a 120x120. The comparison with HPS is on the grow lights page.

Which LED for which grow tent

In flowering you need 300–400 W of actual power per m². The table uses the wattage in the model name; check power draw and the manufacturer's stated coverage on the product sheet.

Efficiency in µmol/J: what it means

Efficiency tells you how much plant-usable light (PPF, in µmol/s) the fixture produces for each watt it draws: µmol/J = PPF ÷ actual watts. At the same wattage, a 2.9 µmol/J LED gives about 16% more light than a 2.5 one. Below 2.2 µmol/J an LED is inefficient; from 2.5 upwards it is good.

  • 2.5 µmol/J: Lumatek ATS 200 W PRO
  • 2.7 µmol/J: Lumatek ATS 300 W PRO, Lumen-King Eco-Line 400 W and 720 W
  • 2.9 µmol/J: Lumatek Zeus 1000 W Xtreme PPFD CO2, Lumen-King Eco-Line 1000 W

PPFD (µmol/m²/s) is the light reaching the canopy: in flowering the target is 600–900 µmol/m²/s.

Installation and use

  • Distance from the tops: 30–45 cm in flowering, 40–60 cm in veg, 50–75 cm for seedlings, unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
  • Dimmer, if fitted: 25–40% for seedlings, 50–75% in veg, 80–100% in flowering.
  • For several lights or high wattages, use a timer with a relay from the timer relay boxes; the heat is removed by a suitable extractor fan.

What size LED grow light do I need for a 100x100 cm tent?

In flowering, 300–400 W of actual power, for example a Lumatek ATS 300 W PRO or a Lumen-King Eco-Line 400 W. In veg, 50–75% is enough.

How much electricity does an LED grow light use?

A 300 W LED on 12/12 uses 108 kWh a month, about 32 CHF at 0.30 CHF/kWh; on 18/6 about 162 kWh, 49 CHF.

Can one LED light be used for veg and flower?

Yes: a full-spectrum LED covers every stage. You change the light hours and intensity, not the fixture.
