How many plants in a 4x4 grow tent, the roughly 120x120 cm size sold in Europe? It depends on floor area and method: without training you count 4–9 medium-sized plants per m², so 2–3 in a 60x60 tent, 3–5 in an 80x80 and 6–12 in a 120x120. With a few large trained plants (SCROG) 1–4 per m² are enough; with many small plants and a short vegetative stage (SOG) you reach 9–16. With the same lamp, yield per m² depends mainly on light and canopy coverage rather than on the number of plants.
In brief
- Rule of thumb: 4–9 plants per m² untrained, 1–4 with SCROG, 9–16 with SOG.
- More plants means smaller pots and a shorter vegetative stage; fewer plants, bigger pots and a longer vegetative stage.
- An 80x80 tent usually holds 3–5 plants in 11–15 litre pots.
- Autoflowers stay smaller: you can aim for the top of the range.
- The final canopy should fill the tent without crowding: you need room for air and for working.
The rule of thumb: plants per m²
In a standard grow each plant fills a canopy of about 35x35–50x50 cm by the end of flowering: that is where 4–9 plants per m² comes from. The number changes with the method, because each method uses vegetative time and pot volume differently.
| Method | Plants per m² | Pot | Vegetative stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| SCROG or large trained plants | 1–4 | 15–30 litres | 5–8 weeks |
| Standard grow | 4–9 | 11–20 litres (7–11 with 6–9 plants) | 3–6 weeks |
| SOG (many small plants) | 9–16 | 3–7 litres | 0–2 weeks, usually from cuttings |
| Autoflowers | 4–9 | 7–15 litres, final pot from the start | not controllable: they flower on their own |
These are starting ranges: compact or tall strains, tent height and lamp power move the right number up or down.
Table by tent size
The table applies the rule to standard grow tent sizes. For height, quality and ports, see the guide on how to choose a grow tent.
| Tent (cm) | Area | SCROG | Standard | SOG |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60x60 | 0.36 m² | 1 | 2–3 | 4–6 |
| 80x80 | 0.64 m² | 1–2 | 3–5 | 6–10 |
| 100x100 | 1 m² | 1–4 | 4–9 | 9–16 |
| 120x120 | 1.44 m² | 1–4 | 6–12 | 13–23 |
| 240x120 | 2.88 m² | 2–8 | 12–24 | 26–46 |
With SOG the high numbers assume identical plants, usually cuttings from the same mother plant, switched to flowering after a few days; how to take and root them is explained in the guide to cannabis cuttings. With different seeds it is safer to stay in the standard column.
A few big plants or many small ones
A few big plants (SCROG, topping, LST):
- fewer seeds or cuttings, fewer pots and fewer plants to check one by one;
- a flat, even canopy under the lamp, if you train consistently;
- 3–5 extra weeks of vegetative growth, so more electricity and a longer grow;
- if one plant gets sick or turns out hermaphrodite, you lose a large share of the harvest.
Many small plants (SOG):
- a shorter grow, because the vegetative stage is short or skipped;
- little training: each plant mainly forms one main cola;
- more pots, more growing medium and more starting material needed;
- a dense canopy: air and humidity need closer attention in flowering.
How to fit and fill the net is explained in the guide to SCROG. How much each method yields, and what that depends on, is in the guide to yield per plant and per m².
Pot, vegetative stage and number of plants
Choose the number of plants, the pot volume and the length of the vegetative stage together. A plant with only a few weeks of vegetative growth does not need a big pot; a plant that has to fill a quarter of the tent on its own does.
- Measure the usable area of the tent, minus the space taken on the floor by filter, ducting or reservoirs.
- Choose the method (SCROG, standard or SOG) and read the number of plants from the table.
- Choose the pot: 15–30 litres for 1–4 plants per m², 11–20 litres for 4–6, 7–11 litres for 6–9, 3–7 litres for 9–16.
- Check the footprint: square pots use space better than round ones; the pot bases must fit with a few centimetres to spare and the final canopy must stay inside the tent.
- Adjust the vegetative stage: switch to flowering when the plants cover about 60–70% of the area, because in the first 2–3 weeks of flowering they still grow 50–100% taller and spread out.
Square plastic pots in various sizes are in the pots collection.
Autoflowers and photoperiod strains
With photoperiod strains you decide the size: more weeks of vegetative growth give bigger plants, so you need fewer of them. Autoflowers, on the other hand, start flowering on their own after 3–5 weeks and usually stay smaller, often between 50 and 100 cm depending on strain and conditions. That is why with autoflowers you can aim for the top of the standard range: 3 in a 60x60 tent, 4–5 in an 80x80, up to 9 per square metre. Put them straight into their final 7–15 litre pot, because they have no time to recover from repotting.
Room to work and for air to circulate
- Access: you must be able to reach every plant to water, check and prune. Up to 100 cm deep you can reach the back from the door; in a 120x120 tent a side door or movable pots help.
- Air between plants: a canopy that is too dense holds moisture and encourages mould in flowering. Let the air from the circulation fan pass above and below the leaves.
- Drainage: every pot needs its own saucer or a shared tray, emptied after every watering.
- Height: more plants in the same tent do not solve the problem of a low tent; with little height you need small or trained plants.
Frequently asked questions
How many plants fit in an 80x80 grow tent?
Usually 3–5 medium-sized plants in 11–15 litre pots, with 3–6 weeks of vegetative growth. With SCROG 1–2 plants are enough; with SOG from cuttings you can fit 6–10.
How many plants per square metre?
Untrained 4–9 plants, with large trained plants or SCROG 1–4, with SOG 9–16. The right number depends on method, pot and length of the vegetative stage.
Is it better to grow a few big plants or many small ones?
Under the same light, yield per m² is similar: a few big plants need more vegetative time and training, many small ones shorten the grow but need more material. For beginners, 4–6 plants per m² is a good compromise.
What pot size for a 60x60 tent?
For 1 large plant a 15–20 litre pot, for 2–3 plants 7–11 litre pots. For autoflowers 7–11 litres is enough, used as the final pot from the start.
